60 years and stronger than ever

We have been up and running for 60 years now!  So we had a fantastic evening at Farnham Castle on 18 January to celebrate the granting of our charter in 1959 and Michael Smailes’ year as our President.  What an amazing venue and great service! With family members and friends from other clubs 128 of us had a noisy and convivial evening till the small hours.

President Michael proudly spoke about all the club has done in the community over this time.  Some things have been going on for years, such as Donkey Derby, some are relatively recent, for example Music in the Park inaugurated in 2002.  The success of that event means we have a realistic aim this year of reaching the half million pounds mark in support of Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care.  Mike humbly said that if we are doing better than ever it is because we are standing on the shoulders of giants and building on their immense efforts.

A lovely meal was followed by a very humorous and thought provoking speech from Geoff Mackey of the Audley Rotary Club in Staffordshire, drawing on his work with the Health and Safety Executive.

The evening wrapped up with two hours of music and dance with excellent sets from a local band.

We are in pretty good health, we don’t let the grass grow under our feet and build on the solid and purposeful work of those who built up the club in its early years.  Our membership remains steady around the 50 mark – 54 at the moment – and our newer members hit the ground running deploying the talents and experience they bring with them.
